Codinc at Scientix conference

The annual Scientix conference took place in Brussels, and “Capital Digital” was presented in a workshop hosted by #codinceu project partner Maks. The workshop presented the best practice and concept behind the practice of capital digital and this was followed by a sharing a module of the codinc/capital digital training with science educators and teachers. The workshop showed an example of guiding teachers, and learners learn coding in a hands-on approach which fostered discussion, collaboration and experimentation. The training used makey-makey and the facilitator helped the learners (in this case, science teachers) set it up, and they experimented with how to make it work, and do some trial and error on how to experiment with coding and STEM. The tasks and workshop illustrated how easy it was to ignite interest and create a environment of communicating and learning with one another.

CODINC adapts, and scales up the Capital Digital good practice. This practice is based on inclusive learning, which was initiated and implemented disadvantaged areas of Brussels, Belgium. The project Capital Digital successfully trained 15-18-year-old youngsters form disadvantaged backgrounds, including migrants and asylum seekers on how to teach and facilitate STEAM education, coding and programming to their younger 10-12-year-old peers allowing them to connect with each other in a constructive way and to enjoy the role of educating their younger peers.. The project employed peer-to-peer learning by encouraging those of similar backgrounds to create a culture of STEAM education in disadvantaged neigbourhoods. These young “e-facilitators” learned to engage children in STEM and coding activities in a playful way. This also gave the youngsters their first work experience which motivated the children to further their education and choose a fitting career—something which was not always considered prior to taking part in the project.

Moreover, the project effectively supports young people in the development of critical thinking, creativity, digital and collaborative skills, and science capital. Most importantly, the Capital Digital peer-learning pedagogical method has a strong inclusive potential and fosters the STEM education.
